Check in and get your Player Pack from 10:00am tomorrow. We’ll be set up near the practice basket. Players meeting at 10:45. Right now it looks like Sunny, 48 degrees and a little windy at go time.

Don’t forget, we’re playing FDR Dubs after the race!
If you’re not in the tournament you can still show up for dubs. I expect Doubles to go off around 2:00pm.

Check the Facebook page for updates.

Old School Tags!

cow-&-milhouse-tags

2012 & 2013 Tags
Why do I have the 45? It’s not polite to ask.

Sure, you’re familiar with the 2013 Millhouse Tag. Perhaps you date all the way back to Ernie’s 2012 Cow Tag. But what came before? Was there such a thing as a tag round before 2012?

There was and it largely involved the exchange of hand-painted beauties like these. I am fascinated by these tags and have been asking their holders to lend them to me so that I can photograph them for posterity. The most history I have been able to glean tells that they were painted by “somebody’s girlfriend I think – I don’t know man – why do you care about this crap?”.

Jessica Hernandez

Artist, Jessica Hernandez

I’ve recently learned that these tags were originally Cranbury’s and were re-tasked for Kisco/FDR in 2008 because, “there was a large uproar about how they were the biggest, ugliest, sharpest and worst tags in disc golf”. When Cran decided to scrap them, a local disc golfer (who prefers to remain anonymous but no one can tell the difference between him and his brother) took them to friend and artist, Jessica Hernandez  who, with brush and paint, re-purposed them.  Twenty of these hand painted tags were produced.

When Jessica heard of my interest in the tags she reached out to me with photographs of the tags when they were new (below). She noted that they actually look better with age. I couldn’t agree more. You can check out Jessica’s art at jessicaleighhernandez.com. Thank you Jessica, for adding a little depth to our legacy.

Legend has it that Daver held the 13 tag for some time. He was certain it was bad luck. On the way to watch the Jets in the AFC Championship game, he pulled his car over and buried the tag by the side of the road. The Jets lost anyway and he later retrieved the tag.

If you know have a story about one of these tags please share it with me. If you have one of these, I’d love to capture the image and throw it up for all to see. Ive also been advised to ask around about the “wooden nickel” or the “laminated tags” from way back in the day. You know something? Spill it!
